Aging players like Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey, and Darius Slay are drawing criticism. Heyward, at 36, is not the powerhouse he once was, while Ramsey and Slay struggle to keep pace with younger talent. T.J. Watt, despite being the league’s highest-paid edge rusher, has also been underwhelming, managing only four sacks in the season so far. A lack of pressure leads to big plays for opponents, making the defense look even worse.
Historically, the Steelers have been renowned for their defense, but this shift raises concerns. According to a recent study by Pro Football Focus, teams with strong defensive rankings often lead their divisions. The Steelers seem to be on a different path with their current performance.
Coaching is another area ripe for discussion. Mike Tomlin, the head coach, has come under scrutiny for his decisions. Some fans and analysts suggest that his approach to the game is outdated. The strategy often relies on field goals rather than aggressive play calling, which can frustrate both players and fans alike.
Changes in personnel have not led to immediate fixes. Trades and player contracts have also faced backlash. Signing Ramsey and trading Minkah Fitzpatrick, despite his past performance dip, seem to have weakened the safety position, especially with current injuries.
In essence, while the Steelers might still have a shot at winning the AFC North with a 9-8 record, the road ahead looks rocky. It’s unclear whether they can turn things around soon.
