Marquette University has welcomed Rodney Crawford as an assistant coach for its men’s basketball team, announced by head coach Shaka Smart. Crawford, who comes from the University of South Alabama, brings impressive credentials and experience to the Golden Eagles.
During his time at South Alabama, Crawford played a key role in leading the Jaguars to their best season in over a decade. They clinched the Sun Belt Conference’s regular season title, something they hadn’t achieved since 2008. In the 2025-26 season, the team finished with a 21-12 record, earning a spot in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Coach Smart praised Crawford’s dedication to the game. He noted that Crawford’s passion and defensive skills make him a great addition. “He can elevate players’ games and bring a winning mentality,” Smart said.
Crawford’s tenure at South Alabama was notable for exceeding expectations. The team, initially predicted to finish near the bottom of their preseason poll, shocked everyone by winning 21 games. They ranked among the nation’s top defensive teams, excelling in categories like field-goal percentage defense and steals.
In the 2023-24 season, Crawford stepped in as interim head coach during a colleague’s absence, leading the team to a fantastic late-season run. His focus on player development was evident, especially in helping standout player Samuel Tabe shine.
Joining Marquette is a significant opportunity for Crawford. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I’ve always respected Coach Smart and the culture he’s built. I can’t wait to contribute to a team that values toughness and teamwork.”
Crawford’s coaching journey spans over 15 years. Before South Alabama, he was the director of player personnel at the University of Cincinnati, contributing to a successful run there as well. His time at Fordham University saw the Rams make their first postseason appearance in over 25 years, emphasizing his knack for building strong defensive teams.
Crawford’s earlier coaching stints included success at Eastern Kentucky, where the team broke records and excelled in defensive stats. He began his coaching career as a high school head coach, mentoring numerous players who later played at the Division I level.
Crawford’s diverse experience and commitment to player development offer a promising future for Marquette basketball. As they gear up for the season, fans can look forward to the energy and expertise he brings to the program.
