Marshall Baseball Triumphs Over Georgia Southern: Friday’s Series Victory Highlights Team’s Journey

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team celebrated a pivotal victory, defeating the Georgia Southern Eagles 10-4. This win not only marked their 30th of the season (30-24, 15-14 SBC) but also secured the series at Jack Cook Field.

Maika Niu made headlines with a three-run homer in the second inning, tying a Sun Belt Conference record by hitting his sixth home run in as many games. The last player to achieve this was Jacksonville’s Jeff DePiano in 1983.

Coach Greg Beals expressed his excitement, saying, “Winning 30 games is huge for our program. It feels great to triumph in the last home series here. The support from Herd Nation was fantastic and gave our team a big boost.”

The Herd showcased impressive offensive skills, particularly from their five through nine hitters. Ethan Murdoch, Elijah Vogelsong, Nolan Wilson, Cam Harthan, and Tyler Kamerer all had multi-hit games. Notably, Harthan stood out with a stellar three-hit performance.

On the mound, Griffin Miller secured his seventh win, allowing four runs (three earned) and striking out six batters. Tim Baird came in for relief and dominated, striking out eight out of the eleven batters he faced, marking his first save of the season.

Marshall took charge early, scoring six runs in the second inning, with two outs. The excitement began when Harthan scored on an infield single, quickly followed by Kamerer’s single that brought home Vogelsong. Niu’s impressive homer capped off the inning, bringing in two more runs.

Although Georgia Southern managed to score all their runs in the fourth inning, Marshall responded strongly in the fifth. A sacrifice bunt by Eddie Leon allowed Niu to score, bringing the game to 7-4. Nolan Wilson later added to the score with a solid hit, driving in two more runs.

The game wrapped up with Kamerer’s two-out single that brought home Vogelsong, solidifying the Herd’s victory.

Looking ahead, Marshall has a chance to sweep the series when they face Georgia Southern again on Saturday at 2 p.m. during Senior Day at Jack Cook Field.
