LAFAYETTE, La. — Marshall’s hopes for the Sun Belt Conference title took a hit when they lost to Coastal Carolina, 6-0. With this loss, the Herd’s record stands at 37-17.
In this match, Marshall struggled to score runs for the second game in a row. This was surprising since they had managed to score in every game up until now.
Coastal Carolina struck early, taking a two-run lead just two batters into the game. Marshall’s pitcher, Jules King, threw six strikeouts and worked hard to get out of a tough situation with the bases loaded in the third inning. Unfortunately, a grand slam by Coastal in the fifth sealed the game for them.
On the bright side, senior Paige Maynard stepped up, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Looking ahead, the Herd’s season hangs in the balance. They had an RPI ranking of 27 before this game—often a promising position for at-large bids in postseason play. Notably, the Herd has secured 26 wins against ranked teams, including four against the Top 50.
Coach Zerkle remains optimistic. “The Sun Belt is one of the top conferences. We’ve faced tough competition all season, which prepares us for the Regional Tournament if we get the chance. I believe in our team’s ability to compete against the best,” she said.
