ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving team faced tough competition at a tri meet against Ohio and Buffalo in Athens. The Herd secured seven top-three finishes despite falling short, losing 180-173 to Buffalo and 247-106 to Ohio.
Head Coach Ian Walsh reflected on the meet, saying, “We made a lot of adjustments, but there’s still room for improvement. Some tight races slipped away from us. All in all, I’m happy with how we performed and can’t wait for our next challenge at JMU.”
Maddie Emment shone in the pool, winning the 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:56.70. She also took second in the 200 Freestyle at 1:50.94. In the 100 Backstroke, Kesniia Luniushina finished first at 54.67. Lauren McNamara also had a strong showing, finishing second in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 54.52.
The team had three athletes finish in third place: Elyse Wood in the 50 Freestyle (23.53), Molly Warner in the 400 Individual Medley (4:25.04), and the 400 Freestyle Relay team, which included Wood, Luniushina, Preslava Toseheva, and Emment (3:26.42).
In diving, Ella Houk placed 13th, with a score of 187.00. Meanwhile, the 200 Medley Relay team finished fourth, showcasing the depth of talent on the team.
Looking at recent trends in college swimming, student-athletes are increasingly pushing their limits, and competition is tougher than ever. According to a survey by the NCAA, swim meets have seen an increase in team performance metrics by over 15% in recent seasons. This trend reflects the high level of commitment from both coaches and swimmers in programs across the country.
Next, the Herd will head to Harrisonburg, Virginia, for a dual meet against James Madison on Saturday, where they hope to build on their recent performances.
