Marshall Volleyball Suffers Tight Loss at Southern Miss
The Marshall University Volleyball team faced a tough challenge on Thursday night, losing 3-1 to Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. This defeat leaves their record at 15-13 overall and 7-8 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Beatrice Ciccarelli stood out with an impressive performance, totaling 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .500, along with two blocks and a service ace for a team-high of 16.5 points. Emma Barnett also put in a solid showing with 13 kills and six digs. Marae Reilly contributed 10 kills on .364 hitting and four blocks. Defensive play was solidified by Audrey Geer, who recorded nine digs and an ace, along with Logan Henderson’s six kills and five digs.
Marshall set a strong pace early in the match, taking the first set 25-18 with a .300 hitting percentage. However, the second set was fiercely competitive, with 14 ties and multiple lead changes. Southern Miss ultimately edged out Marshall 25-22.
The third set saw Marshall close the gap to just one point at 21-20, but Southern Miss pulled ahead to win 25-20. In a dramatic fourth set, Marshall tied it at 23-23 after a kill from Barnett, but Southern Miss responded decisively to close out the match.
Ciccarelli and Reilly’s combined 24 kills showcased their effectiveness on offense with an impressive overall hitting percentage of .437.
Marshall’s next match will conclude the regular season on Friday against Southern Miss.
