Martin Short recently shared his heart-wrenching story about the loss of his daughter, Katherine, who died by suicide. Speaking to CBS Sunday Morning, he opened up for the first time since the tragedy. This comes as he promotes his new Netflix documentary, Marty: Life Is Short.
Short’s childhood was marked by grief; he lost his older brother and both parents before he turned 20. In the interview, he reflected on this experience, saying it helped him develop resilience and a unique understanding of grief.
His adult life hasn’t been easy, either. His wife, Nancy Dolman, passed away from cancer in 2010. Just this past year, he lost Katherine and his dear friend, Catherine O’Hara. Short described his daughter’s mental health struggles, mentioning her battle with borderline personality disorder. He poignantly expressed the pain of her struggle, sharing, “She fought for a long time…until she couldn’t.”
Despite these heavy losses, Short remains positive and continues his work in entertainment. He prepares for another season of Only Murders in the Building and looks forward to a Broadway return with Meryl Streep. “It’s a gamble,” he joked, referring to the uncertainties of ticket sales.
