Martin Short’s SAG Award Journey: COVID Diagnosis Halts Victory, Grateful Message to Peers as ‘Only Murders’ Shines; Steve Martin Shares His Thoughts

Steve Martin’s Reaction:** Martin Short recently made headlines at the SAG Awards, where he won his first SAG Award at the age of 74 for his role as Oliver Putnam in Only Murders In the Building. He had been nominated five times before but finally took home the award in the Male Actor In a Comedy Series category. Shortly after, he also celebrated with his co-stars as the show won the Comedy Ensemble trophy, shocking many at the event.

Unfortunately, Short was unable to attend the ceremony in Los Angeles because of Covid. His representative confirmed that he couldn’t be there and shared a heartfelt statement from him, expressing gratitude for the honor of being part of Only Murders. “Being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so much,” he said.

Short’s close friend and co-star, Steve Martin, also missed the event due to a scheduling conflict. The two had recently appeared together in a special episode of SNL, after which Martin announced on Instagram that Short had contracted Covid. This led Martin to cancel their planned performances in Durham and Knoxville, which coincided with the SAG Awards night.

Since both icons were absent, it was Selena Gomez, one of the leading stars of Only Murders, who accepted the award for the ensemble. She appeared genuinely surprised when the show’s name was announced and humorously remarked, “Marty and Steve aren’t here because… you know, they don’t really care,” which earned a good laugh from the crowd. Gomez also took a moment to acknowledge Short and Martin for their support in her career.

Joining her on stage were co-stars Michael Cyril Creighton and notable guest stars from Season 4, including Kumail Nanjiani and Molly Shannon. Despite many cast members not being there, Gomez’s excitement and the show’s success were clear.

After the event, the team from Only Murders shared a video message congratulating Short and Martin, which Martin later posted on Instagram. The message reflected their disbelief at winning and congratulated Short on his award.

Interestingly, Jean Smart, another winner that night from Hacks, also couldn’t attend as she was filming on location. The awards highlighted the achievements of both established stars and emerging talents in the industry.
