In an exciting move toward global engagement, over 130 Indian lawmakers are heading to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Summit in Boston from August 4-6. This is a significant gathering, featuring members from 24 states and 21 different political parties.
Among those attending are C B Suresh Baabu from Maharashtra, Charan Das Mahant from Chhattisgarh, and Ramesh Chandra Behera from Odisha. This delegation is India’s largest ever at an international conference, coming just a year after a smaller group of 50 legislators visited the U.S. for the first time in a similar capacity. This earlier trip was notable for being led by NLC Bharat, a platform promoting international dialogue among Indian lawmakers.
This year’s participation highlights a growing enthusiasm among Indian representatives to connect with global peers. The summit will gather over 2,000 U.S. legislators and about 7,000 participants from around the world. Topics up for discussion include the impact of artificial intelligence on governance, digital democracy, cybersecurity, and innovative policymaking.
The experience won’t be limited to conference sessions. The delegation will also engage in tours of local legislative bodies and interact with leaders of Indian descent in various sectors, enhancing ties between two of the world’s largest democracies.
The backdrop for this engagement is significant. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 68% of Americans view India as a key partner in addressing global issues. This indicates a mutual interest in strengthening diplomatic and legislative relations.
NLC Bharat, which organizes these trips, aims to build a non-partisan group of informed lawmakers who can share valuable insights from their experiences abroad and bring innovative ideas back to India. Future plans include similar trips to countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, fostering a spirit of learning and collaboration among Indian lawmakers.
By participating in these global forums, Indian legislators not only gain knowledge but also play a role in promoting democratic values worldwide.
