Firefighters are battling the Canyon Fire, which has now spread to nearly 5,000 acres in northern Los Angeles and Ventura counties, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes. “We’re trying to contain the fire and prevent it from reaching nearby communities,” said Andrew Dowd from the Ventura County Fire Department.
This fire is among several that erupted during a heatwave in Southern California. Farther north, the Gifford fire has consumed a staggering 100,000 acres. The heat has been intense, with temperatures hitting 100°F, adding to the challenge for firefighters.
Although a slight cool down is expected, temperatures will still be higher than normal. An increase in coastal winds might help slightly, but residents can still expect scorching weather in the valleys. Fire experts emphasize that the fires are spreading rapidly due to extreme heat and low humidity, creating highly volatile conditions.
The Canyon Fire started near Holser Canyon Road and quickly escalated. Initially reported at 30 acres, it ballooned to over 1,000 acres in just a couple of hours. Currently, 0% of the fire is contained, and over 400 firefighters are on the scene.
By late Friday, about 2,500 residents had mandatory evacuation orders, with others under warnings. Fire response teams faced wind gusts reaching 25 mph, further complicating their efforts. L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger stressed the importance of following evacuation orders, calling them essential for safety.
Photos on social media show both the fire’s devastation and the community’s efforts to protect homes. As concerns mount over fires’ proximity to local jails, civil rights advocates are voicing fears for inmates’ safety.
