A ship from Cyprus is on its way to the Israeli port of Ashdod with 1,200 tons of food supplies meant for Gaza. This shipment aims to ease the severe food crisis in the region, where experts warn about a looming famine.
The vessel, named HENKE, carries over 50 containers filled with essentials like pasta, rice, baby food, and canned goods. Before setting sail on Monday, customs officials in Cyprus had thoroughly checked the aid.
The shipment includes around 700 tons sourced from Cyprus through the Amalthea Fund, supported by donations from the United Arab Emirates. The rest of the aid comes from Italy, Malta, a religious order in Malta, and the Kuwaiti NGO Al Salam Association.
Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos described the situation as “beyond dire.” He emphasized the importance of this mission, coordinated by the United Nations, to deliver assistance to those in desperate need.
Last year, Cyprus helped ship 22,000 tons of aid directly to Gaza. However, these efforts were often hampered by bad weather and security issues, leading to the withdrawal of aid groups by July 2024.
Once the ship docks, UN workers will manage the distribution of food, which is vital given the increasing humanitarian needs. Jorge Moreira da Silva, chief of the UN Office for Operations, called the latest shipment “crucial” for alleviating suffering in Gaza.
Just before this shipment, Hamas expressed acceptance of a ceasefire proposal from Arab mediators, while Israel has yet to respond. The ongoing conflict has made conditions even more challenging, with experts warning of potential starvation in Gaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has downplayed claims of starvation, but the UN recently reported alarming levels of malnutrition. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 62,000 people have died in the ongoing conflict, which started with Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023.
In the past, organizations like World Central Kitchen have played vital roles in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. Their reputation for reliability has made them a trusted source in a region facing tremendous challenges.
As the situation continues to unfold, the urgency for effective aid and support in Gaza becomes increasingly clear.
