Last week, cybersecurity experts unveiled a hacking tool named DarkSword that targets iPhone users. A newer version has now been published on GitHub, raising serious concerns.
This leak poses a significant threat, especially to users with outdated versions of Apple’s operating system. According to Apple, hundreds of millions of devices could still be running these vulnerable systems.
Matthias Frielingsdorf, co-founder of the mobile security firm iVerify, stated, “This is a big issue. It’s too easy for hackers to repurpose these tools.” He believes that this will lead to an increase in attacks as it becomes easier for criminals to exploit these vulnerabilities. The leaked files are basic HTML and JavaScript, allowing anyone with minimal technical skills to host a version on their server in a short time.
Frielingsdorf emphasized, “These exploits will work right away. No special iOS knowledge is needed.” Google’s researcher, Kimberly Samra, echoed his concerns, affirming the urgency of the situation.
A cybersecurity hobbyist known as matteyeux also demonstrated how easy it is to use these leaked samples. He shared on social media that he was able to compromise an iPad mini running iOS 18, which is now known to be vulnerable to DarkSword.
In response to these threats, Apple confirmed it is aware of the situation and provided an emergency update on March 11 for devices that cannot upgrade to the latest iOS. Sarah O’Rourke from Apple stressed, “Keeping your software up to date is the most critical thing for your device’s security.” She reassured users that devices with current software are not at risk and mentioned that Lockdown Mode would help protect against these attacks.
The code from DarkSword includes detailed instructions for exploiting vulnerabilities, indicating how it steals data from compromised devices. It can access sensitive information like messages, contacts, and Wi-Fi passwords, sending them to an attacker’s server.
Experts highlight that about 25% of all iPhone and iPad users are still operating on iOS 18 or earlier, potentially putting millions at risk. With over 2.5 billion active devices worldwide, this represents a significant number of vulnerable users.
The unveiling of DarkSword follows another discovery of a hacking toolkit named Coruna, indicating a troubling trend of advanced cyber threats targeting everyday users. With cybersecurity concerns rising, staying informed and updated is more crucial than ever.
