Massive Layoffs: Hundreds of IRS Employees Let Go in Philadelphia – What It Means for Taxpayers

PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday, hundreds of workers at the IRS in University City found themselves without jobs. Nearly 400 employees received unexpected termination notices when they arrived at work.

Employees reported being told not to do any work that morning. Later, they received emails stating their termination was effective immediately. Nicholas Berardi, who had been with the IRS for about three months, expressed shock at the decision. He shared that the email cited poor performance as the reason for his dismissal, even though he hadn’t received any performance review prior to this.

Berardi mentioned that even his managers were taken aback by the sudden layoffs, especially during a busy tax season. These layoffs represent about 6% to 7% of the IRS’s entire workforce of 100,000, affecting new hires and recently promoted staff across the country.

This wave of job losses is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to reduce the size of the federal workforce and cut costs. Union leaders argue that these cuts are excessive. Alex Jay Berman, from the National Treasury Employees Union, stated that the civil service is vital for an effective government that serves everyone.

Many of the employees who were let go were clearly upset. Kia, one of the laid-off workers, was among the first to get the email and said she immediately broke down in tears. Darien Williams, another employee who lost his job, described the atmosphere at the office as heavy and somber, with little communication about what was happening.

There are concerns that such a significant number of layoffs, especially during tax season, could lead to reduced services and increased chances of fraud. Berman questioned the necessity of these cuts, urging people to consider if they truly want a government that works effectively for everyone.

The situation at the IRS seems to be evolving, and more layoffs might be on the horizon for both the IRS and other federal agencies. As of now, the IRS has not yet commented on the matter.
