Early Tuesday, a wave of drone and missile attacks hit Kyiv, leaving significant destruction in their wake. Ukrainian officials report that multiple residential buildings were damaged, and there are fears that people may be trapped under the debris.
Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, noted that an apartment building in the Podilsky district partially collapsed due to a “double tap” strike. The head of the Kyiv city military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, shared on Telegram that there are indeed victims buried beneath the rubble.
The attacks were widespread, affecting several residential and commercial buildings and igniting numerous fires. One notable incident involved a missile strike on a 24-story building in Shevchenkivskyi district, while a nine-story building in Podil caught fire from falling debris. Moreover, the strikes impacted a clinic and a kindergarten, intensifying the crisis.
Casualties are mounting. Reports indicate at least one person has died, and around 20 others are injured, with power outages hitting three districts. The situation has sent emergency services rushing to respond.
Russia has ramped up its attacks not only on Kyiv but also on other regions. In places like Dnipro and Kharkiv, at least four additional deaths and 24 injuries have been reported.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had recently warned citizens that significant attacks were imminent. He emphasized the persistence of intelligence warnings about a possible large-scale strike. In his nightly address, he conveyed, “A massive strike is possible—they have prepared it.” His concern was fueled by prior Russian announcements of systematic strikes aimed at military facilities in Kyiv.
Interestingly, as the conflict escalates, Ukraine has increased its operations against Russian oil infrastructure. Between January and May, Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted 15 oil refineries, disrupting around 40% of Russia’s refining capacity, according to Zelensky. However, CNN has not independently verified this claim.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Ministry had earlier instructed foreign nationals, including diplomats, to exit Kyiv “as soon as possible.” This comes amid broader concerns over escalating regional tensions and military activities.
This ongoing situation highlights the volatile nature of the conflict in Ukraine, with recent attacks marking a significant escalation in hostilities. As the situation develops, many are watching closely to see how international responses might unfold and what impacts these attacks may have on the broader geopolitical landscape.
