Massive Tel Aviv Protest: Tens of Thousands Rally for Peace and an End to the Gaza Conflict

Tens of thousands gathered in Tel Aviv recently, calling for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza and the return of hostages. This rally marked one of Israel’s largest protests since the fighting began in October 2023.

These protests come in the wake of Israel’s security cabinet approving plans to capture Gaza City. This military action has led to a serious humanitarian crisis, with death tolls reported by Gaza’s health ministry indicating at least 61,000 Palestinians have died, many of whom were civilians.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum stressed that protesters would not back down until they secure the return of their loved ones and end the war. Across the country, people blocked roads and clashed with law enforcement; more than 30 were arrested. Prime Minister Netanyahu criticized the protesters, arguing their actions could jeopardize the wellbeing of the hostages.

Despite this, voices of dissent within the Israeli political landscape are emerging. Benny Gantz, an opposition leader, condemned the government for blaming families while failing to act decisively to rescue their children.

Meanwhile, Egypt is reportedly mediating discussions to secure a 60-day truce that would facilitate hostage release. Yet, some Israeli government members, especially from the far-right, have critiqued the protests as harmful to national security.
