Serious badminton players are always on the lookout for new techniques to gain an advantage. Recently, the spin serve gained a lot of attention. This technique involves spinning the shuttlecock just before hitting it, creating a shot that many believe is nearly impossible to return. So effective is the spin serve that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) banned it in 2023, at least until after the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The ban wasn’t an attack on creativity; it aimed to prevent any unfair advantages in competitive play.
The BWF has faced pushback on this decision, especially since the spin serve is similar to the previously banned “Sidek serve.” In fact, Chinese physicists have recently published research in Physics of Fluids, shedding light on the complex physics behind the spin serve.
The design of shuttlecocks is quite unique. They have a conical shape with sixteen feathers attached to a cork base, which is usually covered with leather. While casual players might use synthetic nylon birdies, serious athletes prefer feathered ones for their superior performance.
These feathers create drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate quickly and to take a sharper downward angle on its descent. Despite this, a shuttlecock can reach speeds over 300 mph. Players need to exert significant force to send it across the court. The feathers also contribute to its natural spin, which affects various shots. For example, slicing the shuttlecock from right to left results in a better tumbling net shot.
Interestingly, the cork base ensures that the shuttlecock is aerodynamically stable. No matter how it’s struck, it will always orient itself cork-first during flight. A study in 2015 confirmed that the shuttlecock’s design hits the right balance in terms of feather geometry, offering better control and a more aerodynamic trajectory compared to synthetic alternatives.
The recent discussion around the spin serve has sparked reactions on social media, with many players and fans debating its fairness and implications for the sport’s future. Some believe that innovation should not be stifled, while others worry about the level of competition. As badminton continues to evolve, it’s clear that both players and governing bodies are committed to maintaining a fair playing field.
