John Mateer’s status for Saturday’s Allstate Red River Rivalry against Texas is still uncertain. The Oklahoma quarterback is on the list as questionable after undergoing hand surgery on September 24. Reports suggest Mateer is eager to return to the field sooner than expected.
When asked about his condition, Sooners coach Brent Venables pointed to an availability report due later on Wednesday. “It’ll come out here tonight, and everybody will get it at the same time,” he said.
The team will release more updates on Thursday and Friday, along with a final report 90 minutes before the game, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET in Dallas.
Mateer was a strong contender for the Heisman Trophy before his injury. He sustained the injury during the first quarter of Oklahoma’s 24-17 victory over Auburn on September 20 but played through it, completing 24 of 36 passes for 271 yards. Since then, he has missed only one game due to the bye week and their victory over Kent State, where backup quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. led the team to a 44-0 win.
The Sooners are optimistic about Mateer’s potential return, but the final decision will depend on how he progresses in his recovery.
