On October 14, Matt Desmond, the regional president of Roper Mount Pleasant and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospitals, shared insights about the changing landscape of health care in the Greater Charleston area. One attendee said it best: “Matt made health care administration very interesting.”
Desmond pointed out the challenges that come with the area’s growing population. For instance, Roper Berkeley Hospital, relatively new, is set to double its size. Meanwhile, Roper Hospital Downtown is building a modern facility near the busy intersection of Rt. 26 and Rt. 526. In East Cooper, plans are underway for a new Health Pavilion on Rt. 17, which will provide emergency care, imaging, and specialty services.
One major hurdle remains: finding enough doctors and nurses to meet the increasing demand. Currently, the Roper System employs about 1,000 physicians and 6,800 staff members, supporting four hospitals and six emergency centers.
Desmond reinforced the system’s commitment to “healing with compassion, faith, and excellence.” This dedication has earned them a five-star quality rating and an A grade for hospital safety for the years 2020 to 2025.
Engagement from attendees was high, with many expressing enthusiasm for upcoming sessions in the LENS Leadership Series, which features leaders from various fields. It’s clear that health care is evolving significantly in our community.
Recent statistics show that demand for health care services is expected to rise nationally by 18% over the next decade. This trend puts additional pressure on local systems to expand both facilities and workforce. Experts stress the need for innovative solutions, like telehealth, to bridge the gap in care availability.
As the community navigates these challenges, feedback from social media highlights a growing concern among residents about wait times and access to services. Many are eager for improvements, making these discussions more crucial than ever.
