Matt Reeves Stands Up for Paul Dano: A Response to Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Weak Sauce’ Comments

Ever wondered which big-name director thinks Paul Dano is an “incredible” talent? Well, it’s not Quentin Tarantino, that’s for sure. But Matt Reeves, the mind behind the 2022 film The Batman, is among those who believe in Dano’s skills.

On social media, Reeves praised Dano, calling him both an incredible actor and person. This came shortly after Tarantino made headlines for critiquing Dano’s performance in There Will Be Blood, the 2007 film featuring Daniel Day-Lewis, who won an Oscar for his role.

During a chat on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino listed his top movies from the 21st century and ranked There Will Be Blood as his fifth favorite. Yet, he felt the movie was flawed, mainly because of Dano’s performance. He pointed out that the film was meant to be a two-hander but said it didn’t fully work because of Dano’s presence.

“He’s weak sauce, man. He’s a weak sister,” Tarantino stated bluntly, criticizing Dano’s role in such a celebrated film. Tarantino did clarify that he didn’t think Dano was terrible; he just found him unremarkable compared to his co-stars.

Dano, known for playing Edward Nashton/The Riddler in Reeves’ The Batman, has worked with many notable directors, including Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve. His versatility has made him a familiar face in Hollywood, despite mixed opinions about his performances.

This kind of criticism isn’t unusual in the film world. Many actors have had controversial receptions before breaking through. For example, Leonardo DiCaprio was once dismissed for his early roles, yet he eventually won multiple prestigious awards. Such history suggests that opinions can change over time as actors grow in their craft.

As for Reeves, he’s busy preparing for The Batman Part II, with Scarlett Johansson joining the cast in a secret role. Fans are eager to see how this sequel unfolds and how Dano’s character will evolve.
