Matt Shakman Explains Why ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Overlooks ‘Thunderbolts’ Post-Credits Continuity

Director Matt Shakman recently clarified why The Fantastic Four: First Steps doesn’t continue the storyline teased in the Thunderbolts post-credits scene. Fans had been excited about the arrival of the Fantastic Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) but were confused when the new film didn’t reference this moment.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in a different universe called Earth-828, while much of the MCU takes place in Earth-616. Shakman explained that since the Thunderbolts scene was created late in his process, he was unaware of it while developing his script. He mentioned, “I often use the metaphor of a relay race. You run your section as hard and fast as you can, then pass the baton,” indicating that each director handles their own distinct storyline.

Even though there was no direct reference to the Thunderbolts, Shakman hinted at future developments. An end-credits scene features Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom interacting with Franklin Richards, who is the son of Sue Storm and Reed Richards, played by Vanessa Kirby and Pedro Pascal, respectively. This storyline will continue in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December 18, 2026.

Increasingly, the MCU is exploring various timelines and universes. According to recent surveys, about 60% of fans enjoy the multiverse concept, finding it provides fresh stories while keeping the spirit of beloved characters alive.

In a world where continuity often matters, it’s all about how stories are told. Some fans are embracing this shift, while others miss the traditional storytelling of the earlier films.
