Thomas University recently honored Matthew Bowman from Walton, Indiana, with the 2026 President’s Award. This award highlights students who show outstanding leadership, academics, and character. The announcement was made during Saturday’s Commencement ceremony.
President Kurt Stringfellow praised Bowman, saying, “When we think of someone who embodies the spirit of Thomas University, one name rises: Matthew Bowman. This university is better because you are a part of it.”
Bowman was one of the first members of the university’s football program, helping to build it from the ground up. As a United States Marine Corps veteran, he led his team with dedication for three years. He has maintained an impressive 3.66 GPA, earning Cum Laude honors, and made it onto both the Dean’s and President’s Lists. He’s also been selected twice for the Sun Conference All-Academic Team.
Beyond academics, Matthews has made a positive impact on his teammates by mentoring younger players and modeling accountability. His support extends beyond the football field; he actively assists fellow veterans through the Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter at Thomas University. He shares his military experiences to help others transition smoothly into school life. In his free time, he volunteers as a flag football coach and helps plan military-related events on campus.
Bowman’s leadership did not go unnoticed. In 2024, Viqtory Media and Military Friendly® named him the Student Veteran Athlete of the Year, recognizing his achievements as both a student-athlete and a veteran advocate.
He graduated on May 2, 2026, with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science, leaving behind a rich legacy of leadership and service.
According to recent data, student engagement and veteran support in schools significantly boost retention rates. The National Student Veteran Association reports that institutions with active SVA chapters see a 22% increase in veteran retention compared to those without. This highlights the importance of community and support systems in academic success.
Bowman’s journey emphasizes the value of resilience and leadership not only on a personal level but also in strengthening community ties, an essential factor in today’s educational landscape.
