BOSTON — Phillip Danault couldn’t contain his excitement. The thought of snow thrilled him. While his wife and kids enjoyed the winter wonderland of Montreal, he was in Boston preparing for his first game back with the Canadiens after being traded from the Kings. “Oh yeah,” he said, remembering the joy of skating outside like he did as a child. “Nothing better than TD Garden.”
Danault is navigating a lot right now. Moving homes, adjusting to a new team, and settling his family—all during the holiday season. “It feels chaotic,” he admitted. His recent time in Los Angeles was challenging, and he’s ready for a fresh start back in Montreal, where he has roots. At 32, he’s now one of the more experienced players on a young Canadiens team, a dynamic he’s eager to embrace.
Having played for the Canadiens from 2016 to 2021, Danault has a history there. He was a key player while he accumulated 194 points in 360 games. Recently, however, his scoring has dipped—zero goals and just five assists in 30 games this season. This stark contrast is something both he and coach Martin St. Louis have discussed. St. Louis believes that with the right system and teammates, Danault’s offensive skills can resurface.
“He can definitely provide offense, but he won’t sacrifice defense for it,” St. Louis said. “His experience is vital, especially in tight situations.” Danault echoed this optimism, stating, “I’m confident in the system and how we play. I want to be a reliable player.” He understands how crucial defensive play is, especially since the Canadiens are vying for a top spot in the Atlantic Division.
Danault’s experience—741 regular-season games and 62 playoff games, including a Cup Final run in 2021—adds a layer of maturity to the team. “Young teams can often try too many flashy plays,” he noted. He aims to help them focus on detailed plays that can be more effective, especially in high-pressure moments.
Statistics from the NHL show that teams with strong defensive players often excel in the playoffs. Danault’s defensive skills and leadership could be key as the Canadiens look to advance further this season. The blend of his experience and the team’s younger talent could create a promising mix as they pursue their goals.
As he steps onto the ice for this new chapter, Danault is ready to bring both his defensive prowess and his experience to the Canadiens, hoping to rediscover his offensive touch along the way.
