Dina McMahon, a dedicated DIY enthusiast from Port Moody, British Columbia, recently discovered her passion for gardening. Initially hesitant, she now finds joy in growing her own food. “Gardening is such a fulfilling activity,” she shares. Here’s how she transformed her small yard into a thriving veggie garden.
One of her first steps was to find the sunniest spots in her yard. Vegetables thrive in sunlight, so she replaced part of her lawn with raised beds from Sproutbox. These beds not only maximize the growing area but also stand 17 inches tall, making it easier for her to tend to the plants.
To extend her growing season, McMahon installed a custom greenhouse from BC Greenhouse Builders. This space allows her to start most of her crops early, including favorites like kale and sugar snap peas. “It’s my escape, especially during rainy days,” she explains.
She creatively utilized the shaded areas of her yard, building a garden shed and opting for shade-tolerant plants like foxgloves and astilbe. “Instead of fighting the shade, I embraced it,” she notes.
McMahon’s compact yard features a dining area near her garden, inviting guests to explore the space during gatherings. It creates a cozy atmosphere that merges food prep and dining seamlessly.
In her raised beds, every inch counts. She fills the gaps between her vegetables with colorful flowers like cosmos and nasturtium. These not only beautify her garden but also attract beneficial insects. Plus, she loves adding the edible nasturtium flowers to her salads.
To keep her gardening organized, she built a compact potting bench using affordable cedar lumber. This workstation helps contain the mess and makes potting plants simpler and less strenuous.
Gardening also aligns with a growing trend. According to a recent survey by the National Gardening Association, 18 million new households took up gardening during the pandemic, reflecting a surge in interest in home-grown food.
McMahon’s experience highlights the joy of making the most of limited space while fostering a greater connection with nature. Embracing challenges in her gardening journey not only enhanced her skills but also brought her newfound happiness.
