May 2023 Sees Global Food Prices Drop: Key Insights from FAO Report | News.az

Global food prices saw a decline in May, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which reported a 0.8% drop in its Food Price Index. This decrease was primarily driven by significant drops in the prices of vegetable oils and sugar.

Grains and cereals, the largest part of the FAO index, also fell by 1.8%. A good harvest of corn in Argentina and Brazil, combined with reduced global demand for wheat, played key roles in this decline. While rice prices rose due to higher demand, particularly for Indica rice, it wasn’t enough to counterbalance the overall drop.

Interestingly, meat and dairy prices increased. The FAO noted a 1.3% rise in meat prices, fueled by growing demand for beef, pork, and sheep meat, even as poultry prices fell. Pork saw a boost after German producers returned to the market, no longer hindered by foot-and-mouth disease. In contrast, concerns over avian flu impacted chicken price demand in various regions.

Dairy prices also rose by 0.8%, largely due to steady demand from Asia, which kept international butter prices historically high and pushed up costs for cheese and whole milk powder.

Among the largest movements in the index were again vegetable oils and sugar. The price of vegetable oils dropped 3.7%, although they remain 19.1% higher than a year ago. This decline is attributed to strong production and lower demand in the U.S. Prices for palm, rapeseed, soy, and sunflower oils all fell. Sugar prices were down by 2.6% as demand from the beverage and food processing sectors weakened amid an uncertain global trade environment.

To put this into perspective, past trends show that food prices can be volatile due to various factors, including climate conditions and geopolitical challenges. Data from the World Bank indicates that fluctuations in food prices can impact global poverty levels, as higher prices often disproportionately affect lower-income families.

Moreover, social media discussions reveal public concern about rising food costs. Many users share tips on budgeting and alternatives to expensive products, highlighting a growing awareness around food security.
