BALTIMORE — New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye faced a tough challenge last week against the Buffalo Bills. With a chance to win late in the game, he couldn’t deliver. But this week, he turned it around against the Baltimore Ravens, leading the Patriots to a 28-24 victory and securing a playoff spot.
“It was a wake-up call last week,” Maye said. “This week, I didn’t want to feel that disappointment again.”
He was impressive, completing 31 of 44 passes for 380 yards, including two touchdowns. This marked his first 300-yard passing game in the NFL.
“Just gritty,” said Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. “He got hit but kept getting up. It was important for all of us.”
According to ESPN Research, Maye faced pressure on nearly half of his dropbacks in the fourth quarter. Despite that, he completed 86% of his passes, averaging almost 10 yards per attempt in that crucial final quarter.
Trailing 24-21, Maye took the ball with just over five minutes left. His first pass connected with receiver Mack Hollins for 20 yards. He followed that with quick completions to running back Rhamondre Stevenson and receiver Stefon Diggs, including a pivotal fourth-and-2 when he found Diggs for a 21-yard gain.
“That was a great ball,” Diggs said, noting how precisely Maye placed it. “I had to put my speed on the route, and he hit me right where I could catch it.”
After moving the ball downfield, Stevenson rushed for a 21-yard touchdown, sealing the game. The Patriots defense then forced a fumble, allowing the team to run out the clock.
“So proud of this team. It took everybody,” Maye said. “We trust each other, and I like our chances in those scenarios.”
With the win, the Patriots improved to 12-3, remaining undefeated on the road this season. Remarkably, Maye is the first starting quarterback since 1950 to lead his team to seven road victories in his first or second season.
The excitement in the locker room was palpable as the Patriots celebrated their first playoff berth since 2021. Yet, both coaches and players acknowledged there are bigger goals ahead.
Next up, the Patriots will visit the New York Jets before returning home to face the Miami Dolphins. Winning both games would earn them their first AFC East title since 2019.
“Clenching playoffs is awesome, but we want to win the division,” Maye emphasized.
This season stands out not just for the Patriots’ comeback but also symbolically for the NFL. As teams vie for playoff spots and division titles, fans are reminded of the thrilling unpredictability of the sport. Recent studies show that approximately 60% of NFL fans closely follow their teams’ playoff hopes, reflecting the emotions tied to each game.
As the season unfolds, the stakes rise. Maye’s journey from last week’s disappointment to this week’s triumph serves as a powerful reminder of resilience in sports. More than just stats, it’s about the heart, determination, and team spirit that drive athletes to give their best.
