Mayor Bass Takes Bold Action: Executive Order to Support Migrants Amid Federal Immigration Raids

Los Angeles Takes Action to Support Immigrant Communities

Mayor Karen Bass recently issued an executive directive to strengthen the city’s response to ongoing immigration enforcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This move comes amid rising concerns about ICE activities, which have intensified under the previous administration.

Mayor Bass plans to file a Freedom of Information Act request with the federal government. She aims to gather information about the detained individuals, the reasons behind their detentions, and the costs associated with ICE operations. “We are a proud city of immigrants,” she said. “I’m committed to using every tool to support our immigrant communities.”

Under this new directive, all city departments must adhere to Los Angeles’ “sanctuary city ordinance.” This means they cannot use city resources for federal immigration enforcement. Departments are required to prepare plans within two weeks to prevent immigration activities on city property. A key part of this effort is creating liaison positions focused on immigrant affairs to better assist families.

Bass emphasized her intention to pursue legal relief against what she describes as unlawful raids. “I will continue to defend the rights of the people of Los Angeles,” she added. The directive also forms a working group with the Los Angeles Police Department and various immigrant rights organizations. This group will guide police actions in relation to immigration enforcement.

On the same day, hundreds of immigrant rights supporters held a rally at Olvera Street, announcing plans for a citywide demonstration on August 12. During the rally, Angelica Salas, director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights L.A., assured the crowd, “You are not alone. We will fight shoulder to shoulder with you.”

Recently, the ACLU filed a class-action lawsuit against the federal government, claiming unlawful detentions and racial profiling in immigration enforcement. This lawsuit involves multiple cities, including Los Angeles County, and addresses allegations that federal agents have violated constitutional rights during their operations.

The sentiment among community members remains strong. Many express their determination to resist aggressive immigration tactics. As the debate over immigration policies continues, the actions taken by Los Angeles reflect a growing resistance to practices perceived as unjust.
