On March 21, 2025, Mayor Francisco Recoulat visited Garrahan Hospital, a leader in pediatric care in Argentina. He attended the visit with Dr. Sergio Valente, the municipal health secretary, engineer Mauricio Girardi, and other local leaders. The goal was clear: to learn from the successes of this top-tier hospital and find ways to improve healthcare in his district.
During the visit, Recoulat expressed, “Our aim was to gain insights from this exemplary hospital and connect our health teams to share experiences.” His enthusiasm indicated his commitment to enhancing healthcare for local families.
Local representatives, like María Claudia Peirone and Teresa Susana Díaz, played crucial roles in facilitating discussions with Garrahan’s staff, including Executive Medical Director Dr. Mariel Sánchez. These conversations aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
One highlight was the introduction of Garrahan Foundation’s recycling program. This initiative, supported nationwide through donations, teaches community members the importance of sustainability. Recoulat praised the program, noting, “We learned how they receive donations across the country.” The visit also included Casa Garrahan, established in 1997, which provides a supportive environment for families traveling for medical care. With 43 rooms and communal kitchens, it offers a comforting place for those undergoing treatment.
The visit also focused on upcoming projects at the Pedro T. Orellana Municipal Hospital. Plans are in motion for a new Intensive Care Unit, with valuable insights from Garrahan’s experienced staff aimed at enhancing local healthcare services.
Garrahan Hospital is renowned in Latin America for its innovative treatments and commitment to sustainability. Over the past 25 years, the Garrahan Foundation collected over 694 tons of recyclable materials, significantly contributing to environmental efforts, including 24.4 million bottle caps. Led by Lic. Patricia Gavilán, the foundation focuses on teaching, research, and environmental awareness, impacting the community beyond hospital walls.
Recoulat acknowledged the vital role of local volunteers in these initiatives, saying, “Our community spirit shines through in our collective efforts.” This collaboration is key to improving the health infrastructure in Trenque Lauquen and supporting families in need.
The partnership between local authorities and Garrahan is promising. It not only seeks to enhance healthcare delivery but also fosters community involvement in environmental and health initiatives. As Mayor Recoulat and his team look forward, their collaboration with Garrahan may inspire similar efforts across the region, emphasizing a modern approach to public health and civic responsibility.
