McMurry University has proudly named its basketball court in the Phillips Family Student Activities Center Sam Nichols Court. This honor celebrates Coach Sam Nichols, who holds the record as the most successful coach in the history of McMurry women’s basketball.
Coach Nichols led the women’s team from 1995 to 2007. Under his guidance, the program blossomed, achieving 199 wins, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and a Sweet Sixteen run in 2000. This period marked a turning point in McMurry’s sports history. In 2011, the team adopted the War Hawks mascot, but the legacy of Nichols’ leadership remains strong.
Kathi Edwards, chair of the McMurry University Board of Trustees, shared her thoughts: “Coach Nichols exemplifies what McMurry stands for – excellence and a commitment to his students and the Abilene community.” This dedication to community goes beyond basketball, reflecting his overall influence on countless lives.
The court is also dedicated to C. Lee Smith, Edwards’ father, and Nichols’ cousin, highlighting the strong family roots intertwined with McMurry’s history. During his 12 seasons, Nichols produced four All-Americans and maintained a remarkable 100% graduation rate for players who completed four years. He earned recognition as the ASC West Coach of the Year in 2006 and was inducted into the McMurry Athletic Hall of Honor in 2017.
After coaching, Nichols remained dedicated to the Abilene community. He became the chief meteorologist at KTAB-TV and founded Basketball Smiles, a free basketball camp program in the Caribbean that has reached over 12,000 underserved youth. This program focuses not just on sports skills, but also on life lessons and encouragement.
“His influence reaches far beyond the court,” said Athletics Director Larry Dockery. “Nichols built a strong community spirit and taught the value of service.” Naming the court after him ensures that his inspiring story will motivate future generations of War Hawks.
In addition to the court dedication, Nichols is set to be inducted into the McMurry Legends Corner in 2026, acknowledging his profound contribution to the university and basketball. This honor highlights coaches who have made a significant impact through mentorship and character, shaping McMurry’s legacy.
The celebrations for the Sam Nichols Court Dedication and Legends Corner recognition will take place on February 1, 2026, inviting alumni, current players, and community members to join in honoring Coach Nichols.
