HUMBLE, Texas – The UNT women’s golf team kicked off its spring season with a nail-biting one-stroke win over Houston Christian at the Golf Club of Houston. This marks their first competition since October.
Freshman Marin Fujiyasu stood out by shooting even par over two rounds. Meanwhile, junior Bouquet Subsomboon—who competed individually—had an impressive performance, finishing at -5 for the day.
Head coach Michael Akers expressed his satisfaction, saying, “Winning was crucial for us. We managed to shake off any winter rust and played on a tournament-level course. Marin showed real promise, and Bouquet played at her potential, which is exciting. The team is motivated to work hard as we aim for Puerto Rico.”
This victory comes off the heels of a strong fall season for UNT, where they secured two top-three finishes. The team is now on the verge of potentially qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Notably, they finished second at the Sam Golden Invitational in September and third at the Bear Brawl in October.
Subsomboon had a noteworthy second-place finish at the Sam Golden Invitational, and senior Malisone Chanthapanya also shined with a second-place finish at the Jim West Challenge, breaking the record for the lowest single round in program history. Freshman Victoria Georgieva impressed by scoring a remarkable 66 during the final round at the Sam Golden Invitational.
As they step into the next competition, the team looks forward to the prestigious annual Purdue Classic in Puerto Rico starting February 1. This event will see them compete against some of the top teams in the country.
Recent statistics show that women’s collegiate golf is becoming increasingly competitive, with the NCAA reporting a rise in both participation and performance metrics. This growth indicates a promising future for programs like UNT as they continue to evolve and showcase talent on a national level.
