To help monitor river health effectively, researcher Diana Rojo studied different materials that can measure decomposition and organic matter production in streams around Vitoria-Gasteiz, areas affected by agriculture. They aimed to identify materials that best reflect changes in streams, offering a simple guide for environmental managers.
Rojo’s team tested various items, including tea bags, banana leaves, and even medical tongue depressors to see which worked best as ecological indicators. They placed these substrates in the water over four weeks to observe their impact on invertebrate and algae communities.
The team found that alder leaves are effective for studying overall decomposition, while banana leaves and cotton strips efficiently indicate microbial breakdown. Marble tiles are great for analyzing algae growth. These materials can quickly provide valuable information about stream health, making it easier for researchers and environmental managers to take action.
According to the EHU researchers, water is essential for life. Healthy river systems support vital processes such as nutrient cycling and carbon storage, yet they are often overlooked.
