Austin Peay State University (APSU) recently welcomed Abigail Purches as their new Student-Athlete Success Advisor. Bobby Fieman, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Success, shared his enthusiasm about her joining the team. “Abbi brings a wealth of experience from both the SEC and Big Ten. Her energy will elevate our student-athletes,” he stated.
Before coming to APSU, Purches worked at the University of Maryland. There, she supported the academic progress of teams like men’s basketball and football, ensuring they met crucial academic standards.
Her journey began at Franklin Pierce University, where she earned a degree in history. She didn’t stop there; she also gained experience as a student ambassador while completing her studies. Following this, she interned at Vanderbilt University, assisting with the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Her education continued at Vanderbilt, where she earned her master’s degree in education.
This move reflects a growing trend in colleges emphasizing academic support for athletes. Research shows that student-athletes often face unique challenges balancing their sports commitments and academic responsibilities. A study published in the Journal of College Student Development highlighted that proactive academic advising can lead to better graduation rates among athletes.
With her extensive background, Purches is positioned to make a meaningful impact at APSU, helping student-athletes thrive both in their sports and academic pursuits.
