Meet Anthony Ruscitto: Veteran Student Awarded the Prestigious Tillman Scholar Honor

“What do I do now?” This question haunts many veterans as they transition from military to civilian life. U.S. Marine Corps veteran Anthony Ruscitto faced this dilemma in 2019. Today, he’s a double graduate of Syracuse University and a second-year law student, determined to help his fellow veterans through legal support.

Ruscitto’s hard work earned him recognition as a 2025 Tillman Scholar, a prestigious honor by the Pat Tillman Foundation. This award empowers exceptional service members, veterans, and their spouses to become leaders. Tillman Scholars receive scholarships, leadership training, and valuable networking opportunities to pursue careers in diverse fields like healthcare, education, and law.

Pat Tillman, a former NFL player, left his career to serve in the U.S. Army after the 9/11 attacks. After his death in 2004, his family started the foundation to honor his legacy and help veterans. Syracuse University has produced 15 Tillman Scholars, showcasing its commitment to supporting military students.

At Syracuse, Ruscitto has worked with the Onondaga County Veterans Service Agency, helping veterans apply for disability benefits. This fall, he will serve as a student lawyer in Syracuse’s Veterans Legal Clinic, offering essential legal services pro bono.

In a recent chat with SU News, Ruscitto shared his journey and the impact of being a Tillman Scholar.

Why did you choose Syracuse? “Syracuse stood out for its resources dedicated to veterans. The mentorship from former student veterans showed me I could thrive in college. Their support, along with organizations like the Student Veteran Organization, helped me adapt and succeed.”

What sparked your interest in law? “In the Marines, I learned to navigate rules and regulations. As an EMT, I saw the importance of helping others. I want to continue this as a lawyer, guiding people through legal challenges and advocating for them.”

What inspired you to apply for the Tillman Scholarship? “Meeting Katy Quartaro, a fellow Marine veteran and Tillman Scholar, inspired me. I admired her advocacy for others. I realized that the resources available to Tillman Scholars could help me achieve my goals.”

How does being a Tillman Scholar feel? “Learning about Pat Tillman has made me realize the weight of honoring his legacy. It drives me to make a meaningful impact in my community, and this scholarship is a significant step in that direction.”

How will this experience impact your community? “I want to engage in volunteer work that fosters positive change. In addition to the Veterans Legal Clinic, I’ll help teach literacy skills to elementary students in Syracuse through the United Way’s Book Buddy program. Ultimately, I aim to enhance resources for veterans and marginalized groups in our area.”
