Meet Aurora Leddy: Advocate for Métis Communities and the Environment
Aurora (Aura) Leddy is the Secretary of Environment, Climate Change & Emergency Management. They are a proud two-spirit Métis person from Edmonton, with roots in St. Albert and Lac Ste. Anne. Aura cherishes their heritage, often finding joy in dancing on the grass while wearing their moccasins. Nature is their refuge. They believe that the soothing sounds—like running water or gentle rain—offer true healing.
Aura’s work focuses on protecting Métis lands and communities in light of climate change. They are dedicated to creating a Métis Climate Strategy that blends traditional ecological wisdom with modern scientific approaches. This strategy aims to tackle specific challenges that Métis communities face due to environmental shifts.
A significant part of their mission is to establish Otipemisiwak Métis Government-led Protected Conservation Areas. These areas will protect lands and waters important to Métis culture while honoring their traditional knowledge and harvesting rights. Aura also supports the development of Community Resilience Plans. These plans address local challenges and enhance the area’s readiness for climate-related emergencies.
In addition to these initiatives, Aura champions programs that empower Métis citizens in environmental stewardship. These programs train individuals in roles focused on environmental monitoring and sustainable resource management. This hands-on approach ensures that communities take an active role in caring for the land.
Aura is also pushing for renewable energy projects that decrease emissions and create job opportunities for Métis citizens. As Chair of the Emergency Management Committee, they collaborate with Council colleagues to improve disaster response efforts and support for communities affected by natural disasters.
Building strong partnerships with academic institutions is another focus for Aura. They aim to document climate impacts and create adaptation strategies that resonate culturally, fostering long-term resilience in Métis communities.
Recent surveys show that climate change is a top concern for Indigenous communities in Canada, with a significant majority stating that it threatens their culture and way of life. Investing in local solutions, like those Aura advocates for, not only preserves the environment but also enhances the cultural identity of the Métis people.
By integrating traditional practices with modern solutions, Aura Leddy offers a well-rounded approach to environmental and community challenges. Their work reminds us that caring for the Earth goes hand in hand with honoring diverse cultures.
