Meet BJ Omot: The Rising Star of Men’s Basketball at the University of Minnesota

BJ Omot is stepping onto the court at the University of Minnesota, bringing both talent and heart. Originally from Mankato, Minnesota, he’s no stranger to the game. After a brief stint with the California Bears, an injury led him to North Dakota, where he shone as a leading scorer and earned All-Summit League First Team honors. His dedication to basketball started young, heavily influenced by his older brother.

Why Minnesota?

For BJ, Minnesota is home. “It feels special to play in front of my hometown fans,” he says. The support from family and friends makes it even more meaningful.

Hometown Pride

Mankato is a growing community with a strong athletic culture. “It’s produced many athletes across different sports. There’s a real sense of community here,” he notes, highlighting the vibrant sports scene.

First Impressions of Williams Arena

This season marks his first time playing at Williams Arena, although he did compete in the state tournament there in 2022, where his team finished third.

Early Start in Basketball

BJ began playing basketball when he was just three years old, inspired by his brother who also played the sport. “I just wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he shares. His brother played five years at Southwest Minnesota State and aspires to go pro.

Overcoming Challenges

After undergoing surgery this summer, BJ focused on supporting his team from the sidelines. “I kept the energy up when the team needed it,” he says, underscoring the importance of teamwork.

Rehabilitation has been challenging but fruitful. “I’ve been in rehab for about eight months. Each day brings more progress, and I’m feeling stronger,” he reveals.

Learning from Teammates

BJ appreciates the team dynamic at Minnesota. “Everyone is driven to improve and win,” he says. This close-knit support makes him optimistic for the season ahead.

Fun Tidbits about BJ

Many might not know that BJ dabbled in soccer before fully committing to basketball. When asked what he’s looking forward to, he replies, “Just having the community at my games. Coach Niko is fantastic at what he does, and I believe we can achieve great things together.”
