Bryant Scharenbroch, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, is a notable figure in soil science. This year, he received the University Scholar Award for his impactful work connecting soil health to real-world issues.
Scharenbroch leads the Pedology Laboratory, where he studies the interactions between soil and human activity. “We look at how humans impact soil and how soil affects us,” he explains. His research covers essential topics like urban soil contamination, stormwater management, and the significance of soil health for urban trees.
In agriculture, he has explored methods to enhance soil quality, including the use of residuals and the potential benefits of crops like hemp. His team is also investigating how fire affects soil in forest ecosystems, as well as the role of soil in grassland restoration and wetland health.
Under his leadership, the Wisconsin Soil Health (WISH) Laboratory serves as a crucial resource for soil health testing and education. Farmers and citizens submit samples for analysis, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in this vital area of research, emphasizing the connection between science and community.
Since joining UWSP, Scharenbroch has attracted almost $2 million in research funding and authored 27 peer-reviewed papers, influencing the academic community significantly. He has received over 40 awards for his work in research, teaching, and outreach.
