Meet Clemson University’s 16th President: Guskiewicz Takes the Helm!

Clemson University has announced Kevin Guskiewicz as its next president, marking a significant milestone in its 136-year history. This decision comes after an extensive national search, and Guskiewicz was selected unanimously by the Board of Trustees.

Guskiewicz is not just an academic; he’s a well-respected neuroscientist. He previously held top positions at Michigan State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His start date at Clemson is still being finalized.

In his own words, Guskiewicz expressed his excitement: “I’m honored to help lead the University into the future.” He emphasized his eagerness to engage with the Clemson community, including students, faculty, and alumni. He believes in advancing student success and upholding Clemson’s mission to serve the people of South Carolina.

The selection process was thorough. The Board’s search committee, led by Cheri Phyfer, was impressed by the qualified candidates interested in the role. Guskiewicz stood out with his extensive knowledge of higher education, particularly Clemson’s land-grant mission.

His credentials are impressive. Guskiewicz won a MacArthur Fellowship in 2011 for his groundbreaking work on sports concussions, influencing safety protocols in both college and professional football. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and was recognized by Time magazine as one of the “Game Changers” in 2013.

In addition, he was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame. Guskiewicz holds multiple degrees, including a doctorate in sports medicine.

Board Chair Kim Wilkerson shared optimism about Guskiewicz’s leadership, stating he has the vision to guide Clemson in its next chapter, building on its long history of excellence.

The search process was collaborative. The committee engaged with 18 different groups from the campus community, ensuring that diverse voices were heard in choosing the new president.

Guskiewicz hails from Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and shares his life with his wife, Amy, and their four children: Jacob, Nathan, Adam, and Tessa.

Historically, Clemson University has evolved significantly since its founding. Once an agricultural college, it’s now a leading research university. This leadership change might herald a new era, one where the focus continues on innovative research and community service.

As Guskiewicz steps into this role, social media reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, showcasing a hopeful sentiment among students and alumni eager for new energy and vision. With his strong background and clear commitment to student success, he seems poised to make a real impact.
