Meet Cooper Flagg: Maine’s Basketball Star Ready to Shine in the NBA!

Cooper Flagg, a standout basketball player from Maine, is poised to make waves in this year’s NBA draft. He could become the first-ever No. 1 pick from the Pine Tree State, and the excitement is palpable among his hometown supporters.

“It’s amazing to have all of Maine behind me,” Flagg said at the AT&T Flaggship Experience event in New York. He felt the deep connection to his roots after visiting home this summer. “It’s a cool feeling knowing I get to make history.”

Flagg hails from Newport, a small town rich in natural beauty and known for its tight-knit community. Drafted or not, he will be just the third Maine-born player in the NBA and the first in over four decades. For context, Illinois and North Carolina have produced seven No. 1 picks each since the draft began in 1947—Maine has been waiting patiently for its turn.

Family support clearly plays a big role in Flagg’s life. His mother, Kelly, was a strong basketball figure herself, leading her team at Nokomis Regional High School and later at the University of Maine. His family’s basketball legacy shines bright, with both his brother Ace and father Ralph also having played at competitive levels. Ace currently plays at the University of Maine.

Cooper’s passion for the game emerged early, often battling it out with his brothers in their driveway. “Those moments built my competitive spirit,” he shared. Ace remembers nights packed with friends and family cheering for them, saying, “Our community really brings out the best in him.”

The connection to Maine remains vital, even off the court. Last year, Flagg signed with New Balance, a brand with deep roots in his home state. “It aligns perfectly with who I am,” he mentioned, recalling how his mom used to shop there.

Flagg has garnered support from fans all over New England. Former Celtics player Brian Scalabrine emphasized how Flagg’s story inspires young players in remote areas. “He shows that you can come from anywhere and succeed,” he said.

As the draft approaches, the excitement around Flagg continues to grow. Many in the community, even those who don’t typically follow basketball, are rallying behind him. “Maine is buzzing over this,” remarked a local resident. “We all feel like he’s one of ours.”

Cooper Flagg stands as a beacon of hope for athletes everywhere, proving that talent can shine brightly, no matter the location. Whether he’s holding up a trophy or celebrating with his family, Flagg’s journey is just beginning.
