Meet Jalpa Devi, MBBS, a passionate new faculty member at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and a gastroenterologist at Nebraska Medicine. Originally from Tharparkar, Sindh, Pakistan, Dr. Devi has an impressive medical background.
She completed her MBBS at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, followed by an internship at Yousuf Patel Memorial Hospital. Her education continued with a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology and advanced inflammatory bowel disease at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Devi specializes in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), focusing on conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She is particularly interested in the challenges of perianal Crohn’s and the impact of obesity on IBD. One exciting aspect of her work is integrating artificial intelligence into gastroenterology, which could reshape how we diagnose and treat diseases.
Dr. Devi’s journey into medicine began in her childhood. Growing up in a village, she saw her father provide free medical care to those in need. This generosity deeply influenced her decision to become a physician. During her training, she was drawn to gastroenterology’s complexities and found fulfillment in helping patients navigate chronic illnesses. The combination of compassion and advanced medical science solidified her dedication to this field.
Her professional memberships reflect her commitment to gastroenterology. She is part of several organizations, including the American College of Gastroenterology and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization. Additionally, she co-chairs the Women in GI Emerging Leaders Committee, promoting women’s leadership in healthcare.
Outside of her medical career, Dr. Devi enjoys spending quality time with her husband and children. She also embraces new experiences, often exploring different places and learning chess from her son.
For patients, Dr. Devi sees individuals at the Frederick F. Paustian Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Center and the procedure center at Village Pointe Health Center. If you’re interested in her services, you can reach her at 402-559-0264.
Research shows that about 3 million adults in the U.S. are living with IBD, and this number continues to rise. Innovations in treatment and patient care are crucial as we seek to better support those affected by these chronic conditions. Dr. Devi is at the forefront of this effort, bringing her expertise and compassion to every patient encounter.
In a time where healthcare is rapidly evolving, Dr. Devi’s insights and contributions become more relevant. The integration of technology in medicine promises to enhance patient outcomes and address the growing demands on healthcare systems. Her journey not only inspires future generations of physicians but also highlights the profound impact of empathy in medicine.
