Meet Dr. Shannon Wheeler: Spotlights on Our New Faculty and Their Inspiring Journeys

Shannon Wheeler, MD, recently joined the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) as an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She also practices as an ear, nose, throat, and audiology physician at Nebraska Medicine.

Originally from Tempe, Arizona, Dr. Wheeler completed her medical education at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2020. She is currently completing her residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at UNMC, set to finish in 2025. Dr. Wheeler has a particular interest in general otolaryngology and is dedicated to educating medical students and residents.

Dr. Wheeler’s journey into medicine began when she worked as a scribe in an otolaryngology clinic before embarking on medical school. This experience solidified her passion for ENT, leading her to fully commit to this specialty.

Outside of her medical career, Dr. Wheeler has traveled to 27 countries. She enjoys life in Omaha, even as a fifth-generation Arizonan, and is an avid snowboarder.

For patients needing appointments or referrals, Dr. Wheeler sees patients at several clinical locations:

  • ENT and Audiology at Lauritzen Outpatient Center: 402-559-5208
  • ENT and Audiology at Twin Creek Health Center: 402-559-5208
  • Children’s Nebraska: 402-995-3993

Recent studies show that the field of otolaryngology is evolving, with innovations like virtual consultations and telehealth becoming increasingly popular. Notably, a survey indicated that 64% of ENT specialists believe telehealth will remain vital post-pandemic, which reflects a significant shift in how patient care is managed. This trend offers exciting opportunities for both patients and practitioners, improving access to care across diverse communities.

As Dr. Wheeler continues her journey, her blend of clinical expertise and global perspective promises to enhance patient experiences at UNMC and beyond.
