East Lansing, Mich. — Tamara Durante has stepped up as the head coach of the Michigan State field hockey program. This marks an exciting chapter as she becomes the 10th head coach in the team’s history.
Vice President and Director of Athletics J Batt expressed confidence in Durante’s capabilities. He noted her strong national reputation, having worked with USA Field Hockey and served on the NFHCA Board of Directors. With 11 seasons under her belt at Michigan State, Durante aims to nurture talent both on and off the field.
“It’s such an honor to lead Michigan State field hockey,” Durante shared. She appreciates the Spartan community and emphasizes building a culture of hard work and integrity while striving for excellence in the Big Ten.
Durante’s coaching has already shown tangible results. Under her guidance, 11 Spartans have earned All-Big Ten honors, including standout players like Carmen Pucheta, who was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2024. In addition to these accolades, eight Spartans have been recognized nationally, showcasing Durante’s impact on the program.
In the broader field hockey community, Durante’s influence is significant. Since 2002, she has contributed to the USA Field Hockey system, coaching various age groups. Notably, she helmed the U-16 USA team starting in 2023 and is set to lead them at an upcoming international tournament in the Netherlands in 2026. Her experience includes helping U-21 teams win gold and bronze medals at major competitions.
Before joining Michigan State, Durante spent a decade at Yale, where she was key in recruiting and coaching. Her leadership helped the Bulldogs secure an Ivy League title in 2011.
Interestingly, women in coaching roles, especially in sports like field hockey, have seen a growing trend. According to a 2020 NCAA report, women held only 39% of head coaching positions across NCAA sports, highlighting the importance of role models like Durante in promoting female leadership.
As a native of Lachine, Quebec, and a graduate of the University of Alberta, Durante brings a rich background to her new role. With her experience and dedication, she’s poised to lead Michigan State field hockey to new heights.
