Meet Euless High Schoolers on a Mission to Boost Eye Health Awareness!

When Prashid Lamichhane first had a migraine with aura, he was confused and frightened. The shimmering zigzag lines made him think he was losing his vision. At just 16, this unexpected episode compelled him to learn more about eye health.

Realizing there wasn’t much information available, Lamichhane took action in 2024. He started a project called Ocura Eye Health at his school, Trinity High in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD. What began as a local effort quickly gained momentum. Now, Euless celebrates Eye Health Awareness Week every March, thanks to his initiative.

Ocura aims to become a nonprofit this summer. “We didn’t have a clear plan at first,” Lamichhane shared. “But we saw how much people resonated with our message online, and that pushed us further.”

The group primarily spreads awareness through social media and community events. They host webinars and give presentations on topics like ocular migraines and vision care. Lamichhane emphasizes the importance of personal connections. “In-person interactions can draw more people in than just online presentations,” Ryan Shivakoti, head of financial outreach, added.

Additionally, Ocura seeks to connect aspiring medical students with mentors. They’ve already made strides internationally, presenting at the Nightingale School in Kathmandu, Nepal. “As we progressed, we wanted to reach beyond our local community,” Lamichhane explained.

Support from local teachers and families has fueled their mission. Positive feedback from both local and online communities inspires them to continue advocating for eye health awareness.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, nearly 50% of adults in the U.S. report some kind of vision problem. This statistic highlights the need for awareness and education about eye health. Raising that awareness can help many people who often suffer in silence.

With Ocura Eye Health, Lamichhane and his team not only aim to educate but also to create a supportive community around eye health issues. Their journey shows that even young voices can spark significant change.
