Meet Fabian Gomez: Inspiring Stories from the University of Nevada, Reno’s Faces of the Pack

Fabian Gomez, a first-generation college student with a disability, knows what it’s like to be underestimated. After completing the University of Nevada, Reno’s Path to Independence (P2I) program, he’s now pursuing a degree in education to become a special education teacher. His journey is a blend of hard work, resilience, and a desire to inspire others.

“P2I helped me grow as a person,” Gomez shared. “Before joining, no one encouraged me to aim for a bachelor’s degree. The staff showed me it was possible.”

The Path to Independence program aims to help students with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience college life inclusively, build academic and social skills, and prepare for meaningful careers. For Gomez, this experience was life-changing. “I loved interacting with my peers and receiving support from the staff. They pushed me to manage my schoolwork and set high standards that boosted my confidence.”

Juggling school and independence is a big part of his college journey. He works about 30 hours a week as a recreation lead for the City of Reno. Meanwhile, he’s living on his own and paying rent.

“I enjoy learning in class and using that knowledge at work with kids,” he explained. His passion for working with youth, especially those with disabilities, guided his choice to major in education.

Reflecting on his background, Gomez said, “Growing up Hispanic and low-income, I lacked the support I needed. My case managers and teachers didn’t see my potential, so I didn’t, either. Now, I want to inspire others with disabilities to chase their dreams and find successful careers.”

After graduation, he hopes to create a classroom where students feel supported and empowered. “I want to help people like me gain the confidence they need to succeed,” Gomez stated.

Being part of the Wolf Pack community motivates him. “I love the supportive environment here. It’s like having a family,” he added. His advice to fellow P2I students is straightforward: “Believe in yourself. People may underestimate us because of our disabilities, but we bring value to the world. With determination, we can achieve great things.”

Gomez’s story isn’t just about personal triumph; it reflects a broader movement toward inclusivity in education. According to a recent report by the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of students with disabilities pursuing higher education has steadily increased over the last decade. This shift highlights the importance of programs like P2I, which encourage independence and academic success.

His journey aligns with the idea that, with proper support, students with disabilities can thrive in academic settings and careers. Gomez’s experience embodies the essence of determination and community support that defines the Wolf Pack Way.
