Meet Franjo von Allmen: The Youngest Men’s Downhill World Champion in 36 Years!

Franjo von Allmen from Switzerland has achieved an impressive milestone. At just 23, he is the youngest man to win gold in the downhill event at the World Alpine Skiing Championships in 36 years. He clinched victory with a time of 1:40.68, finishing just 24 hundredths of a second ahead of 2021 World champion Vincent Kriechmayr from Austria.

Another talented Swiss skier, 25-year-old Alexis Monney, secured the bronze medal. Notably, Dominik Paris from Italy and the defending champion from Switzerland, Marco Odermatt, also competed strongly in this event. Bryce Bennett represented the United States, finishing in 10th place.

With this win, von Allmen has made history as the youngest men’s downhill world champion since Germany’s Hansjörg Tauscher took the title in 1989. Despite it being his first senior global championship, he had already showcased his skills by winning three silver medals at the junior world championships in 2022.

This year, von Allmen came into the World Championships with four World Cup podium finishes under his belt, including a super-G victory. He had a solid showing, finishing 12th in the super-G event at the championships.

The competition continues with the women’s team combined event, featuring teams of one downhill and one slalom skier from each nation. This new format adds excitement to the championships and will be broadcast live.
