The University of California is making headlines with the appointment of James B. Milliken as its new president. He will take the helm on August 1, 2025, succeeding current president Michael V. Drake, who has been in the role since 2020.

This move has been instrumental in boosting college enrollment and reducing student debt. In fact, UT’s research funding reached almost $5 billion annually, ranking it second in the nation.

Janet Reilly, chair of the UC Board of Regents, praised Milliken’s deep understanding of higher education’s critical role. She stated that his experience will help the University navigate the fast-changing landscape it currently faces.

One of Milliken’s notable achievements at CUNY was expanding the ASAP program, which helped double graduation rates for community college students. He also played a key role in launching a medical school focused on underserved communities in New York City.

Milliken’s commitment to public education extends through various roles. He has received numerous honors, including the Distinguished Nebraskan Award and the Fulbright Award for Global Education. His leadership style is characterized by collaboration and a willingness to listen, qualities that are vital now, as the higher education sector faces numerous challenges.

The search for a new leader began in November 2024, involving feedback from students, faculty, and alumni. Student Regent Josiah Beharry emphasized the importance of selecting a leader who embodies equity and affordability in education.

With around 300,000 students, UC plays a significant role in both California’s economy and its educational landscape, contributing over $80 billion in economic activity annually. Milliken’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the university system, as they look to uphold their tradition of excellence and service.
