Joyce Koech is a dynamic young climate activist from Kenya, making waves in the global fight for environmental justice. She is actively involved in various climate initiatives, especially in her home region of Mombasa. Koech’s passion for conservation began with her direct experience of environmental challenges, particularly the impact of plastic pollution on coastal waters.
She co-founded Blue Earth, a youth-led organization focusing on mangrove conservation and raising awareness about climate change. “We noticed the damage plastics were causing in our oceans and felt compelled to act,” she shares. The organization primarily empowers women, particularly those in the fishing sector, helping them improve their livelihoods while addressing climate issues.
Mangroves are a key focus for Koech’s initiatives. These unique trees can absorb five to ten times more carbon than terrestrial forests, making them essential in the fight against climate change. Since 2021, Blue Earth has planted over 54,000 mangroves, a number that’s continually rising.
Koech has participated in multiple UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs) where she learns about global climate policies. Initially, she found it overwhelming, but now she confidently advocates for mangrove conservation and the importance of climate justice. “Many women are disproportionately affected by climate disasters,” she notes. “They need to be empowered and supported.”
At COP meetings, she is vocal about the needs of those most impacted by climate change, especially in Africa and the Global South. Koech emphasizes that climate justice includes funding for loss and damage caused by environmental changes. Her role in the recently established Loss and Damage Fund highlights her commitment to advocating for these communities.
Koech is not just about big meetings; she’s actively involved on social media, too. Recently, the Loss and Damage Youth Coalition highlighted her efforts, stating that youth are creating spaces for dialogue and pushing their demands to the forefront. “Climate actions must protect ecosystems and the memories and ways of life tied to them,” she said.
Her story of activism reminds us that every voice matters in the fight against climate change. By raising awareness and advocating for sustainable practices, Koech inspires others to join the cause for a healthier planet.
