Meet Kaiya Forbes: This Month’s Inspiring Rotary Student of the Month!

The Rotary Club of Penticton Sunrise honors Kaiya Forbes, a remarkable grade 12 student from Princess Margaret Secondary School, as the Rotary Student of the Month for April. Her impressive achievements in academics and sports, alongside her strong leadership in community and school activities, set her apart.

Kaiya was born in Fort St. John but moved to Penticton at a young age. Growing up in a family that values sports, she learned the importance of hard work and determination early on. This foundation has supported her journey toward academic excellence, especially in science subjects where she boasts an impressive average of 94%.

Her curiosity about how things work truly shines in her studies. A highlight was her fascination with genetics during a Grade 10 biology unit, prompting her to delve deeper into the subject. She eagerly took biology 11 to explore lower organisms, culminating in hands-on experiences in anatomy and physiology in grade 11.

Kaiya’s teachers have noticed her strong work ethic. Chris Becker, her math teacher, praises her for her positive attitude and hard work. “She goes above and beyond in her studies,” he shares. Similarly, chemistry teacher Shawn Lum commends her dedication, stating that her positive demeanor impacts everyone around her.

Sports have always been a delight for Kaiya. She started skating at four and quickly ventured into hockey and softball. By middle school, she was competing at high levels, including on the Penticton U15 rep hockey team and several local softball teams. These experiences taught her valuable lessons about teamwork, discipline, and self-confidence.

After focusing on academics in grade 11, Kaiya began coaching local softball teams, sharing her passion for the sport. Her father, PJ Forbes, who also coaches her, notes that she has a talent for encouraging and uplifting younger players. Kaiya previously pitched in the 2022 BC Summer Games and is now coaching the 2024 team for Zone 2.

Beyond sports, Kaiya has played a significant role in charity initiatives at her school. Encouraged by her friend, she joined the leadership program this year. One of her major achievements was organizing the 10,000 Tonight food drive, which brought in over 17,000 items for the Salvation Army food bank, setting a record for the most donations collected post-COVID-19.

In addition to this event, she has been involved in Cancer Awareness Week and is set to lead an Earth Week event focusing on sustainability practices. Leadership teacher Archie McKinnon highlights her organizational skills and dedication, saying, “Kaiya is an outstanding person who greatly enhances our school community.”

With all her commitments, including a part-time job at a local store, Kaiya has mastered time management, prioritizing her responsibilities while still making time for relaxation. She enjoys kickboxing and leisurely walks with her mom to unwind.

Looking ahead, Kaiya plans to study Biology at the University of Fraser Valley and aims to pursue a career in neurosurgery. Her determination, resilience, and genuine personality suggest she has a bright future ahead.

The “Student of the Month” program by the Rotary Club of Penticton Sunrise celebrates exceptional students who stand out academically, athletically, and through community service. This initiative has formed strong partnerships with local schools and businesses, fostering a culture of recognition and support for youth in the community.
