Meet Louise Smith: From Culinary Passion to Community Leadership as Solvang’s Newest City Council Member

Louise Smith is all about passion, service, and community. She has worn many hats—private chef, wine professional, and now, she’s the new City Council member for Solvang.

Since moving to Solvang in 2009, she has made a mark in the community. Recently appointed to the District 3 seat, Louise took over after David Brown became mayor. Despite being defeated by him in the 2022 election, her supporters encouraged her to run again, and she did just that.

“I had great support last time,” Louise shared. “When people said I should run again, I knew I had to. And I’m glad I did!”

This appointment is a big deal for her. She will serve until December 2026. “I feel overwhelmed and grateful,” she said, excited to represent her district and Solvang as a whole.

Louise has a real love for her area. “District 3 is diverse, with businesses and homes, and a strong sense of community,” she noted. “I want to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.”

She plans to focus on important issues like water independence, affordable housing, and emergency preparedness. “We’ve seen how fires can threaten cities,” she added, wanting to create a solid plan for emergencies. With limited escape routes in Solvang, Louise is determined to ensure everyone is safe in case of disaster.

Before stepping into the council, Louise spent two decades in the culinary world. She started her catering business, Louise’s Kitchen, in 2004. Her venture thrived, especially in Solvang, due to the community’s support.

“My life was all about food and wine, but now it’s also about politics,” she laughed. Louise’s career in the wine industry includes work at notable wineries like Brander Vineyard and Mosby Winery. She is also a certified sommelier, sharing her knowledge at Hancock College to mentor new talent in the field.

Outside of her work, Louise has a soft heart for animals. She’s fostered many cats, and recently adopted one named Earl Grey, a gray cat found abandoned at Vega Vineyard. “He’s truly regal,” she said, explaining how she rescued him from the cold.

As she starts her new role, Louise is eager to learn and lead. “I’ve been to a couple of meetings, and I’m absorbing so much. The community’s engagement is inspiring,” she remarked.

Wanting to stay connected, Louise encourages residents to share their questions or concerns. She aims to support the community and help Solvang thrive.
