Meet Our Newest Team Member: Enhancing Child Life at Edgewood University

Madison, Wis. (October 30, 2025) – Edgewood University has launched a Master of Science degree in Child Life. This program trains graduates to become Certified Child Life Specialists, professionals dedicated to making healthcare experiences easier for children. They work in hospitals and other challenging settings, helping kids cope with stress.

This fall, the Child Life team welcomed a new member: Irie, a black Labrador retriever who is a certified facility dog. Irie is here to support students and enhance the program’s learning experience.

Facility dogs like Irie are specially trained to assist in healthcare and educational environments. They work alongside Child Life Specialists, helping young patients during tough procedures and providing emotional comfort. The presence of a facility dog can be incredibly reassuring for children facing medical challenges.

“Irie adds a unique dimension to our program,” says Katie Glass, EdD, CCLS, Associate Dean and Program Director. “She shows students firsthand how powerful the bond between animals and humans can be. Her joy and warmth have made a significant impact on our campus community.”

Irie was trained at Can Do Canines, a nonprofit based in Minnesota that has provided assistance dogs since 1989. Such organizations are crucial; recent studies show that interactions with dogs can significantly reduce anxiety in children, especially in hospital settings. This aligns with the growing recognition of the therapeutic benefits of animals in healthcare.

As the role of animal-assisted therapy becomes more established, Irie’s presence will likely inspire future practices in Child Life. Students will gain valuable insights into how therapy dogs can improve the emotional well-being of pediatric patients, adding a compassionate touch to care amid challenging circumstances.
