Howard University sophomore Stanley Scott has been awarded the 2026-2027 English-Speaking Union (ESU) Luard Morse Scholarship. This prestigious grant offers up to $30,000 for students to study abroad in the United Kingdom. Scott, an economics major from Atlanta, Georgia, makes history as the first Howard student to win this scholarship since 2017.
Scott will study at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), a top-ranked institution according to The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. His time in London will span two semesters, beginning in August 2026 and concluding in May 2027.
“I’m excited about the new experiences ahead,” Scott shared. “I know I’ll meet amazing people and see life through a different lens.”
The Luard Morse Scholarship aims to support second-year students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). To date, 90 scholars have studied at various renowned British universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Scott is among a select group, with 19 Howard students having received this honor since it began in 1969.
Monique Robinson Clark, chair of the ESU Luard Morse scholarship committee, praised Scott’s selection, emphasizing the significance of this life-changing opportunity.
Scott credits Howard’s ACE Scholars Program for guiding him through the scholarship process. “I didn’t know much about this opportunity before joining ACE,” he explained. His interest in studying abroad was piqued during a brief trip to Paris in high school.
Before Howard, Scott considered other universities but found his place at Howard after connecting with fellow students. He sees his education as a way to broaden his horizons. Recently, he interned as a credit risk analyst at Corpay, a corporate payments firm in D.C. On campus, he’s involved with the Abram Harris Economics Society and the Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society in Economics, among other activities.
Reflecting on his journey, Scott said, “I’ve had experiences that changed how I view life. I want to make a positive impact while enjoying the process, rather than just focusing on the outcome.”
Scholarships like the Luard Morse help students like Scott explore their passions while gaining valuable experiences abroad. In a time when education and opportunities are more vital than ever, Scott’s story shines a light on the importance of support systems in higher education.
