Meet Texas A&M’s New Chancellor: Driving Growth to Address Texas’s Future Needs

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Glenn Hegar is the new chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. He’s focused on expanding the system to better serve Texas, which is experiencing rapid population growth.

“Texas is gaining 1,500 people every day,” Hegar said. “We can’t centralize everything in College Station.”

The Texas A&M University System is large, with 170,000 students across 12 universities and eight state agencies. Half of these students study in College Station.

Hegar believes the university can play a big role in Texas’s economy. Previously, as Texas Comptroller, he helped boost the state’s economy from the 12th largest in the world to the 8th. His experience gives him a strong foundation for his new role.

To understand the system better, Hegar has been visiting all the campuses. He sees this as crucial for identifying strengths and new opportunities. Connecting with students is also important to him. “I want to hear what they think,” he said. “Even if they don’t know who I am, I want them to feel comfortable sharing their feedback.”

With the focus on growth, Hegar wants each university to benefit the local community. “Education is key to our economic future,” he emphasized.

Beyond just teaching, the Texas A&M system is advancing research and technology. Hegar highlighted the need to innovate not just for Texas but for the entire country. Each university contributes to this through research that can improve lives.

As Hegar continues his tour, he plans to engage with state agencies too, promoting teamwork in all aspects of the university system.

In recent discussions on social media, students have shown excitement about Hegar’s commitment to listening to their needs. His approach is already generating a positive buzz among future and current students.
